"I am often asked if I am not lonely on my solitary excursions. It seems so self-evident that one cannot be lonesome where everything is wild and beautiful and busy and steeped with God that the question is hard to answer."
— John Muir

Gaia Vista

Rainforest Valley overview

The main 60 acre parcel of land that we will be creating Gaia Vista on is absolutely ideal for creating a project like this. Our property is the gateway to a large rainforest valley with 1000's of acres of primary rainforest, and is one of the best place for hiking and rainforest exploration for many miles around.

This area of Costa Rica is the only area in Central America where the mountains still covered with primary rainforest jut right up to the Pacific Ocean

Most of the land below ours was cleared for farming in the past, and it is on this farmland that a lot of western development is now happening. One of the nice parts of all this development is that no rainforest is being chopped down in the process. The area has lots of amenities and restaurants close by. Discover more about the area.

Now for the informal tour of our present property.

Our present 60 acre parcel of land is bordered on one side by the river that runs through the valley, and on the other two sides by two streams, there is also an additional 3rd stream that runs through the center of the property. On our present piece of property there are over a dozen waterfalls ranging in height from 6 ft to over 100ft.

Unfortunately, we had a digital nightmare and all our pictures were lost. The only ones that we presently have came from a low quality video shot a few years back, so excuse the lack of clarity in the pictures, and the lack of a full spectrum of pictures about this special piece of land. We will be shooting more pictures and video upon our next return to Costa Rica.

The entrance of Gaia Vista is the steam below, and is a short walk from the main road. Thirty yards down from this point in the picture below, the stream launches into a 80 foot waterfall that lands in the river below. Sorry no picture of this waterfall at this moment in time. As you cross this entrance stream, you then enter the main part of our property.

#

As you enter the property you come to a flat area with palm trees and other natural fruit trees. This and another portion of our property are the only 2 naturally flat plantels in the entire area, and perfect for building or just hanging out on.

Below this flat part there is a fairly steep about 60 ft drop off down to the river. Right below this main area is a 20 foot waterfall, with a small area to swim below it, and another larger swimming area just above the waterfall. (Sorry no pictures at the moment, but they will be coming soon)

Above the flat portion is a fairly steep hill that was cleared in the past and has magnificent views of the ocean. The bottom area of this hill would house the more rustic lodge / workshop area and possibly the organic restaurant, the higher parts of the hill would be partly used to build small Cabinas overlooking the ocean and to plant lots of exotic fruit trees.

Below is a picture of a few friends sitting on the beginning of this portion, the ocean view from this point is in the picture below this one.

#

Below is the view from this point. Our property is about 2 miles from the coast and in the start of a mountain rainforest valley. Our property starts at around 600 ft and therefore is a bit cooler than the hot temperatures down below

#

On the left side of this view is the start of a hill covered in primary rainforest that juts up from the river below and forms the starting point of the rainforest valley. The scenery at the river below this main part of our property is absolutely stunning as the primary rainforest juts up on either side of the river.

The geography of the virgin rainforest hill on the left offers a unique opportunity to view primary rainforest without having to be in it. This is unique as we know of no other rainforest reserve / eco resort that offers this unique rainforest viewing experience. With binoculars you will be able to sit in the lodge and view the rainforest canopy seeking out birds and the troop of howler monkeys that lives in the area.

Below are a couple pictures of this rainforest viewing aspect that is right at the beginning of our property.

#

What you are looking at is the top canopy of fairly large trees in the virgin rainforest. There are over 300 varieties of trees on the property, and each has its own shade of green that provides a kaleidoscope experience of various shades of green that is quite breathtaking to say the least.

#

The top of the rainforest hill that you are looking at is about 300 feet above the flat area shown above. This small hill follows the river to the top of the rainforest valley about 2 miles inland. The other side of the river goes to the top of our property, and then up to 3000ft to the top of the mountain. The entire top part is virgin rainforest and from the top of our property to the peak is government protected land.

From this main portion and the start of the property, the trail meanders through a nature experience that is hard to describe. Along this path are various places to build bungalows where you can look out at the rainforest and hear the rushing of the river below. Approximately 150 yards from the picture above along this trail is another beautiful point that has been cleared in the past, and is right next to the primary rainforest and is the future home of the more deluxe eco lodge / workshop area.

#

This area has a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean, and also of the primary rainforest that you can see in the picture above. The view of the Pacific Ocean from this same point is below.

#

This will be the site of our main eco lodge / workshop area and the home of our deluxe Cabinas.

Just above this point approximately 75 yards is the start of the primary rainforest that goes through most of the property.

About 200 feet from this point and in the primary rainforest is Tres Cascadas, a 3 tier waterfall, with the first tier being around 7 ft and the next 2 tiers being around 25 ft each. Below one of these is where we are going to put the naturally rock built propane driven hot tub.

Also just above this area is where we are going to be building our Tree House complex and our Sky Hammock™. Near here will also be our zip lines for our canopy tour, and one of the zip lines will go across to the other side of the river and into the primary rainforest that you just saw in the above pictures. Several other zip lines will also traverse through the canopy itself so that you will have a bird’s eye view from within the primary rainforest.

Below is a picture of one of the waterfalls in Tres Cascadas. This picture is from a distance. Sorry we don’t have any close ups at this time but will take them on our next trip to Costa Rica. This picture definitely does not do it justice, and it is definitely a special place. If you look at the very top part of the waterfall you can see the start of the third fall. This 3rd waterfall is about 35 feet back from the second one, and also has a nice hang out area below it.

#

About 60 yards below this waterfall the stream joins the river below, and it is at this point on the trail of our property that it opens up into another flat area approximately 200 yards in length that was cleared in the past and is ideal for organic farming and various other building projects. This entire length of fairly flat cleared area parallels the river and is quite magnificent. We also could build various Cabinas right next to the river at this point. At the end of this area is another stream which acts as our present properties furthest boundary. This stream has several large waterfalls on it.

Well that ends the present tour of our property. We will end with a couple pictures of the river that runs along the above flat point of our property.
